Business Improvement District

by John Vujcich

It is the best opportunity we have had to stand up for ourselves, reinvigorate ourselves, by ourselves, for the benefit of ourselves, without relying on Council, Government, someone or something else other than ourselves. The alternative is to wait and continue to be the possums in the headlights, letting change happen to us rather than making positive change.

Moving on up to Kaikohe

by Steve Sangster

After much searching, we found a property just outside of Kaikohe that matched our needs and was affordable. A staff member purchased the K9 Heaven land and business. We moved on up to the World Capital of Ngapuhi in June 2011. Many of our friends thought we had lost the plot: maybe they still do! Now we’ve been here just over a year with no regrets whatsoever. We are here to stay. The people are warm, friendly and down to earth.

GO THE ALL BLACKS

by John Vujcich

Not since 1987 when the then All Black captain David Kirk held the Webb Ellis Cup high to the cheers of New Zealand fans have the All Blacks won the World Cup. The All Blacks are arguably the dominant team in International Rugby, and yet when it mattered most in 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007 we were dominated.

Kaikohe Post Cards

by Dot Field

On 24th April I received a request from a German couple who had travelled around New Zealand and had not been able to locate a Postcard from Kaikohe and asking if I could send them one please. My hunt for a Kaikohe Postcard started. I soon discovered that there were no Postcards for Kaikohe in any of our stores. There were a couple of Pioneer Village ones but none at all which represented our town of Kaikohe.

One hundred and fifty years ago, Samuel Blomfield Ludbrook and his wife Caroline purchased 1500 acres of the Taiamai plain, becoming the first white settlers in what is now called Ohaeawai. As part of the 150th anniversary celebration Chris and Sam Ludbrook invited artist David Barker to create a series of artworks featuring the local area. But the exceptionally sunny, dry conditions have been able to be enjoyed by many hundreds of holiday makers and the main street of Kaikohe with its pretty hanging floral baskets and newly erected string of lights on the power poles, look very attractive. Of late Councillors have been meeting to deliberate on the draft Far North District Annual Plan. We in the Western Community Board seek economic growth opportunities, quality recreational facilities and well maintained front line services.

Guitar and Gloves Special Thanks

by Kelly Van Gaalen

The concert was well attended with a large crowd of adults and children. Perhaps most of them were thinking it was strange and a little bit weird, but one of the Kaikohe Community Arts Councils objectives is to encourage and access a diverse range of arts. This I think we achieved!! We extend a special thanks to Northland College for the use of the Gymnasium and to HUB Trust (Sarah and Leif) for putting on a fabulous children’s day.

From famine to feast in the far north.

by Steve Radich

What a difference a day, a week, a month - of easterly weather can make. And interesting how both the fishing and the rain drought have been broken by the same weather change. Jumped off the boat a few times early – mid January and I was in an ice tub – in and out in a jiffy. Then the other day I jumped into turquoise water inside Cape Karikari and it was as warm as a baby’s bath – didn’t want to get out. Musta been a good 23°C.

Christmas Musings on Darwin and Origins

by John Vujcich
Over the Christmas break two things got me pondering about the question of our origins and God. There was the Boxing Day Herald story on Darwin’s nine day visit to New Zealand around Christmas 1835 and the receiving of an email from a friend about bus signs in NZ that were originally inspired by Richard Dawkins, a Darwin follower.
